The Austin Chapter of Credit Unions is an organization for the credit unions in the Austin area. The chapter is very active in community service and has received the TCUL Texas and the CUNA National Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility award in 2002, 2003, 2004,2005, 2006 and 2007 for our work!

Supporting the Children’s Hospital of Austin

We’ve been involved in fund raising efforts for the Children’s Hospital of Austin since 1988. The Chapter is at the forefront of the efforts to better serve the health needs of children in the Austin area. Our commitment is to help improve and equip the children’s hospital to provide all children, regardless of ability to pay, with the best medical care possible.

2004 brought a really new aspect to our plans – our hospital that we worked so hard to build is already too small to care for all the children in the 46 county area it serves. The Children’s Medical Center Foundation made plans to build the Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas! The Austin Chapter, supported by the Austin credit union presidents, pledged to raise $2.5 million over the next seven years to fund the Austin Chapter of Credit Unions Inpatient Wing for the center.

By constantly improving the hospital Austin is able to attract top physicians in all specialty areas. Parents don’t have to quit their jobs and families aren’t split up to take a sick child to a distant hospital in another city. The Chapter Inpatient Wing will be a permanent reminder that credit unions are “People Helping People!”

We believe that our Children’s Medical Center fund-raising is unique because it demonstrates a sustained, long-term commitment. All the Austin-area credit unions work together to plan our CMN raffle, Kids Classic Golf Tournament, and extra activities! This project is also unique because it demonstrates to the community a united effort of credit unions in the Austin area. Our commitment to the community through the Children’s Medical Center has evolved into a yearlong effort, as it has become a part of the Austin credit union culture. Employees from all our credit unions voluntarily cooperate to work together to find innovative ways to increase our funds for the new Medical Center. We have challenges and contests and a huge celebration at our June chapter meeting each year!

Many children from our own credit union “family” have needed the Children’s Hospital of Austin. It is so gratifying to see our efforts helping our own and so many other children! The feeling of personal satisfaction in seeing the help provided at the hospital has accelerated the cooperation and commitment of each credit union’s staff, management, and volunteers, who are directly responsible for the continued success of our annual fundraising.

Supporting the Capital Area Food Bank of Central Texas

The chapter also supports the work of the Capital Area Food Bank by donating the proceeds from our spring golf tournament and having food drives in November!
